Amazon.com War is hell, but if you prepare properly for war, there's not much about life that will take you by surprise. At least, that's the premise of Unleashing the Warrior Within, in which author Richard Machowicz takes the lessons he learned as a Navy SEAL and applies them to real-life situations. For example, in war you learn that there are three dynamic elements of combat: target, weapons, and movement. The target dictates the weapons, and the weapons dictate movement. In real life, your target is what you want; your weapons are your skills; and movement is whatever you need to get in position to use your skills. But, since deciding upon a target is the step that's most troubling to people, he adds another wartime analytical tool called the CARVER matrix. You lay out various targets you may have in life--a better job; getting in shape; buying a new house; and taking on a new business partner, say. Then you assess the criticality, accessibility, recognizability, and vulnerability of the target, plus its effect on your overall mission in life, and the potential return on your effort. Machowicz calls his philosophy Bukido, and when you take his classes in Los Angeles, you learn self-defense along with these life-improvement skills. In this book, the object is to get you to choose a mission that is closest and most important to you, and then achieve your goals with military precision. By the time you're through learning the seven principles of combat, what you've really learned is how to think critically and focus your efforts. Machowicz uses his students as examples of how the enemy in life is really a lack of action, allowing life to take you along for a ride. So if your current target is a solid self-improvement course, Unleashing the Warrior Within could be your most effective weapon. --Lou Schuler
Product Description
Richard Machowicz knows first hand that life can be a lot like war. A ten-year veteran of the Navy SEALs, he was trained to complete whatever mission was handed to him, under any condition, because failure was not an option. Now, in Unleash the Warrior Within, Machowicz takes the winning attitude and mental skills he mastered in service and shows readers how to use combat mentality to reach their goals in everyday life. Using his seven principles of combat—which include Create an Action Mind-Set, The Critical Keys to Conquering Anything, and Guarantee the Win—Machowicz shows readers how to master the arts of focus, discipline, and determination under any circumstances, giving them the tools they need to conquer fear and turn their ambitions and dreams into reality. A new preface is included in this paperback edition of this inspiring guide. "Machowicz gives you the tools necessary to ensure that you win in the battle of life."—Jim Rome, host of the nationally syndicated radio show, The Jungle, and FOX television's The Last Word

Don't be put off by the packaging August 2, 2008 Aj Viljoen (Kuwait) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered this book while on an Amazon shopping spree. When it arrived I stood there going "What was I thinking?". Navy SEALS, macho man on the cover, mean stare and a title that reads "Unleash the warrior.." Anyway, I've made some stupid purchases in the past, so at least it wasn't as if this was the first one. A few days later I got the flu and had to stay in bed for a few days, so I started paging through this macho title. And suddenly I propped myself up, and got a pen and paper for notes. This book was good! It seems as if most of the macho stuff was concentrated on the cover. Okay, so the author tells quite a few stories about his SEAL-days, but always to illustrate a point. Funny thing is, the point was often related to un-macho things, such as (his own) fear and feelings of inadequacy. As I lay there reading, I soon came to realise that this was the VERY BEST self-improvement book I've ever read. Yes, even better than Covey's "Seven Habits" (because Machovitz's advice will work for everyone, his ideas are not pie-in-the-sky, and the methods have been tried, tested and perfected in numerous very difficult situations). If you are from the Carnegie school, you are also in for a surprise - this guy is genuine, and not once does he imply anything along the line of "fake it till you make it". Quite the contrary. Machovitz is a good writer, and his editor also did a great job. I enjoyed the book thoroughly. Not one boring page. His anecdotes from his military days were amusing, captivating and thought-provoking. A good read even if this isn't a leisure book. The purpose of the book is to provide the reader with "tools" with which to order his life, establish and prioritise goals, and then to equip himself with the right mindset to go out and get it. Very effective. And it works. While reading the book, I had a pen and paper handy with which I made notes. I used the 8 or so pages I've made and prepared a series of talks for my employees. The results in their lives were as dramatic as the changes in my own. Don't let the packaging put you off. It's one of the most life-changing books I've ever read.
Success tools you can apply immediately July 19, 2008 Michael Akbar 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of the most valuable verifiable lessons from this book is how far we can go beyond our own self imposed limitations and of course the author's personal story is a great point of reference to remind us of that reality. I integrated this lesson into my daily tools and was amazed how my mind's "tricks" with exhaustion, thirst and all kind of other excuses to interrupt my difficult tasks gave way to levels of productivity and achievement I had never experienced before. This book is now a must-read for my business advisory clients. I still feel I have only applied a small fraction of what the author has developed into a system and being a slow learner it will be a little while before I can report on the full potential of this book, even though I have already seen amazing results. What I also like about this book is the nice balance between personal experience of the author and how he uses that to reinforce the concepts. This book is now glued to my desk!
Unleash The Warrior Within April 18, 2008 David Perry (Ca. USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this the best selfhelp book I have ever read. This one works! Right from the beginning you are given easy to use methods and tools that start taking you forward immediately. Great entertaining stories woven throught this book keeps the whole process moving. There are many new ideas that I needed to reread and pratice, but it did not seem like work at all. I am over 50 yrs. old and wish I would have been able to read this in my twenties, so I bought it for my son. He is glad I did. I give this book five stars.
SEALs get it done, right? March 30, 2008 Christopher Wanko (Nutley, NJ USA) I can appreciate the work Mr. Machowicz has done in abstracting his experience and knowledge into something that can be used by anyone to accomplish their goals. His basis of thought comes from one of the most universally understood concepts in society, that of war and in general, conflict and politics. It's no mistake that Sun Tzu is a primary reference in this book, as war has often been the primary analogy for any conflict resolution. However, despite the labeling of his precepts being very much adapted from his military background, the theory is sound and unencumbered by unrelated anecdotes or detours into tangential subject matter. "Figure out what you want, plan an attack, execute your plan... and here's how". It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that, and why should it be? The simpler it is, the easier it will be to get right, and adapt to your circumstances. He emphasizes being honest with yourself at all times, and taking a longer view of the road ahead. There are no promises of easy success, only a single promise of improvement if you can muster the discipline necessary to execute even the smallest of changes. From one step... -C
NOT DEAD, CAN'T QUIT!! January 18, 2008 E. Milliken (Monrovia CA) Give fear the BOOT! If you pick up and read "Unleash The Warrior Within", we'd hope you would want to tap into learning how to focus, function capably through fear and hit a target, (and not just the physical targets, mind you) but all the others that come up in life as well. That is precisely what the book promises and accomplishes. Machowicz will show you in a very straight forward and result-oriented way how to achieve RESULTS. Tangible, real, completely proof-worthy results. Not a book for wimps, as really looking at what you need to do and how to do it and even why it hasn't gotten accomplished BEFORE requires looking at yourself very honestly...and that is extremely difficult for most people...Luckily Machowicz easily manages to be clear and compassionate for the struggles we all have around fear...this book will give you USABLE tools. (Also, he tells great stories, and some of them are very funny!) The book was so awesome both my husband and I completed training seminars with this intelligent, gifted man. Not dead, can't quit!
